ESPR Mattress Ecodesign Requirements

Mattresses are included as a distinct priority product group in the ESPR Working Plan 2025–2030, with European Commission delegated-act adoption currently targeted for Q1 2029. This adoption target is indicative. The delegated act will define the covered mattress types, applicable ecodesign and information requirements, transition period and final application date.

The mattress delegated act is developed separately from the furniture delegated act. Mattresses present distinct product architecture, chemical safety and end-of-life recycling challenges that require dedicated ecodesign rules and data structures.

Mattress Digital Product Passport

The future mattress delegated act will introduce product-specific Digital Product Passport requirements. A mattress DPP is expected to connect product identification, dimensions, core and cover material composition, chemical declarations, durability ratings, dismantling instructions, and recycling guidelines across mattresses placed on the EU market.

Key expected data fields include:

  • Product identification, dimensions, core thickness and total weight
  • Layer-by-layer bill of materials (foam core, latex, innerspring, ticking, adhesives)
  • Polyurethane foam density (kg/m3) and bio-based / recycled polyol ratios

  • Chemical safety declarations and restrictions on halogenated flame retardants
