ESPR Aluminium Requirements
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation establishes the framework for introducing product-specific sustainability, performance and information requirements across the EU market.
Aluminium is included as a priority intermediate product in the ESPR Working Plan 2025–2030, with European Commission delegated-act adoption currently targeted for Q1 2028. This adoption target is indicative. The delegated act will define the covered aluminium products, applicable ecodesign and information requirements, transition period and final application date.
The 2026 impact assessment process examines potential information and performance requirements, including product carbon footprints, recycled scrap content, alloy identification and substances that may impede recycling.
Aluminium Digital Product Passport
The future aluminium delegated act will introduce product-specific Digital Product Passport requirements. An aluminium DPP is expected to connect alloy composition, temper, mechanical properties, primary vs recycled content, carbon footprint indicators, supplier origins and conformity evidence across products placed on the EU market.

The EU DPP Registry became operational on 20 July 2026, but this does not make Digital Product Passports mandatory for aluminium products today.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and PPWR
The definitive phase of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM, Regulation (EU) 2023/956) covers specified unwrought aluminium, extrusions, sheets and articles. Importers exceeding the 50-tonne annual threshold must obtain authorised CBAM declarant status and report embedded emissions.
Aluminium packaging products also interface with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), requiring high recyclability performance grades and mandatory recycled content targets.
